37So, who is more unjust than the one who coins a lie against Allah or rejects His signs? They shall receive their share from that (sustenance) which is written (for them in their destiny) until, when Our envoys (angels) shall come to them to take their souls away, they (the angels) will say, “Where are those (so-called gods) whom you used to invoke besides Allah?” They (the unbelievers) will say, “They all have vanished from us”, and they shall testify against themselves that they were unbelievers.

Commentary

So who is more unjust than he who fabricates against Allah what he did not say, or lies about what He said? Those will have their share from the Book, meaning from what has been written for them of provisions and lifespans. Until when our messengers come to them, to the limit for them to receive their share and fulfill it, meaning until the time of their death. This is the 'until' after which the speech begins, and the speech here is the conditional sentence, which is: When our messengers come to them, they say. And they take their souls, in reference to the messengers, meaning they take their souls. The messengers are the Angel of Death and his assistants. 'And what' is connected to 'where' in the script of the Mus'haf, and it should have been separated, because it is connected in meaning: Where are the gods that you invoke? They have gone astray from us; we do not see them nor benefit from them, acknowledging that they were not on anything in what they were upon, and that they did not praise Him in the end.
