Commentary
Take your adornment, meaning your ornaments and the clothing of your adornment, at every mosque whenever you pray or perform Tawaf. They used to perform Tawaf naked. It was reported from Tawus that he did not command them to wear silk or brocade. Rather, one of you would perform Tawaf naked and leave his clothes behind the mosque. If he performed Tawaf while wearing them, he would be beaten and they would be taken from him. This is because they said: "We do not worship Allah in the clothes in which we have sinned." It was said that this was an optimistic belief that they would be stripped of sins just as they were stripped of clothes. It was said that adornment refers to combing the hair. It was said that it refers to perfume. The Sunnah is for a man to take his best appearance for prayer. The Banu Amir, during their pilgrimage days, would not eat food except for sustenance, nor would they eat rich food, as they honored their pilgrimage by this. The Muslims said: "We are more deserving to do so." They were told: "Eat and drink and do not waste." From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: "Eat what you wish and wear what you wish as long as you avoid two traits: wastefulness and arrogance." [This was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah who reported from Sufyan from Ibrahim ibn Maysarah from Ata and Tawus about this, but he said 'two traits.' Al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ahmad, and Al-Hakim narrated from the narration of Amr ibn Shu'aib from his father from his grandfather who raised it: 'Eat, drink, give charity, and wear what you wish as long as you do not mix it with wastefulness or arrogance.'] It is said that Al-Rashid had a skilled Christian doctor who said to Ali ibn Al-Husayn ibn Waqid: "There is nothing in your book about the science of medicine. Knowledge is of two types: the knowledge of bodies and the knowledge of religions." He said to him: "Allah has gathered all of medicine in half a verse of His Book." He asked: "What is it?" He said: "His saying, 'And eat and drink and do not waste.'" The Christian said: "Does nothing from your Messenger affect medicine?" He said: "Our Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, has gathered medicine in simple words." He asked: "What are they?" He said: "His saying: 'The stomach is the house of disease and diet is the head of medicine.'" [I did not find this, and Al-Aqili narrated in Al-Du'afa from the narration of Ibrahim ibn Jurayj Al-Ruhawi from Zayd ibn Abi Anisah from Al-Zuhri from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurairah - who raised it: 'The stomach is the reservoir of the body. The veins flow to it: when the stomach is healthy, the veins flow with health, and when the stomach is corrupt, the veins flow with sickness.' He said: This hadith is false and has no basis. Al-Daraqutni said it is not authentic and is not known from the words of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, due to the chain of Ibrahim ibn Jurayj except for this, and he was a doctor, so he made a chain for it.] And give every body what it is accustomed to." The Christian said: "Your book and your prophet have not left Galen any medicine."
