Commentary
And if a whisper from the devil should provoke you, then seek refuge with Allah and do not obey him. The term 'nazgh' and 'nakhis' refer to prodding and poking, as if he prods people when he entices them to commit sins. And he made 'nazgh' a provocation, just as it is said 'the grandfather's grandfather.' It has been narrated that when this was revealed, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, 'How, O Lord, while anger...' [This is reported by al-Tabari from the narration of Ibn Wahb from Abdul Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam: 'When it was revealed,' and he mentioned it in detail.] And it was revealed: 'And if a whisper from the devil should provoke you.' It is also possible that by 'the whisper of the devil' is meant the onset of anger, as Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'Indeed, I have a devil that attacks me.' [This is reported by Ishaq ibn Rahawayh in his Musnad, and Ibn Sa'd in al-Tabaqat said: 'We were informed by Wahb ibn Jarir, who narrated from Jarir ibn Hazim, that I heard al-Hasan say: 'Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, gave a sermon one day and said: 'By Allah, I am not the best of you, and I was reluctant for my position here. I would have preferred that there be someone among you to take my place, and that I act among you according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, when I stand for it. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, used to rely on revelation. And there was an angel with him. And I have a devil that attacks me. So when I become angry, avoid me.' This was narrated by Abdul Razzaq from Ma'mar from a man from al-Hasan in a similar manner. And we narrated it in the part concerning the Ansar from the path of Abu Hilal from al-Hasan, who said: 'When Abu Bakr was appointed, he began with words that no one else had spoken.' And he mentioned something similar.
