Say, 'I do not possess for myself any benefit or harm.' This is an expression of servitude and a denial of what pertains to lordship from the knowledge of the unseen. I am a weak servant who does not possess for myself the ability to bring about benefit or to avert harm, like slaves and servants, except what my Lord and Master wills for me in terms of benefit and protection from harm. If I were to know the unseen, my situation would be different from what it is, as I would be seeking abundant good, gathering benefits, and avoiding evil and harm, so that nothing of it would touch me. I would not be victorious at one time and defeated at another in battles, nor would I be winning and losing in trade, nor would I be right and wrong in plans. I am nothing but a messenger, a warner and a bearer of good news. It is not my affair to know the unseen for a people who believe, as it may relate to both the warner and the bearer of good news, because warning and good tidings are beneficial to them. Or it may relate only to the bearer of good news, with the reference to the warner being omitted, meaning except as a warner for the disbelievers and a bearer of good news for a people who believe.
