Commentary
Many of the jinn and humans are those whose hearts are sealed by Allah, who knows that they will not receive any kindness. He has made them so that they do not direct their minds to knowing the truth, nor do they look with their eyes at what Allah has created with a view to reflection, nor do they listen to what is recited to them from the signs of Allah with the intention of contemplation. It is as if they have lost the understanding of hearts, the sight of eyes, and the hearing of ears. He has made them, due to their deep-rootedness in disbelief and their strong inclination towards it, that nothing comes from them except the actions of the people of the Fire. They are created for the Fire, indicating their deep entrenchment in the causes that qualify them for entering the Fire. Among this is the letter of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, to Khalid ibn al-Walid: 'I have heard that the people of Sham have made for you a drink mixed with wine, and I think you, O family of al-Mughira, are destined for the Fire.' It is said of one who is deeply rooted in certain matters: 'So-and-so was created only for this.' The intention is to describe the state of the Jews in the enormity of what they have done by denying the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, despite their knowledge that he is the promised prophet. They are among the many from whom faith is hardly attainable, as if they were created for the Fire. Those are like the cattle in their lack of understanding and reflection, and they are even more misguided than cattle in terms of understanding, reflection, and contemplation. Those are the heedless, fully immersed in heedlessness. It is said that cattle perceive their benefits and harms and adhere to some of what they see, while most of these people know that they are opposing and still proceed towards the Fire.
