Commentary
And when We lifted the mountain above them, We uprooted it and raised it, as His saying: 'And We raised the mountain above them.' From it: to lift the water skin, if he shakes it to extract the cream from it. And the shade: everything that shades you, whether from a canopy or a cloud. And it was read with a طاء, from أهل عليه if he overlooks. And they thought that it was going to fall upon them, and they knew that it was going to drop on them, and that was because they refused to accept the rulings of the Torah, due to its severity and weight. So Allah raised the mountain above their heads the size of their army, and it was a mile by a mile. They were told: 'If you accept it with what is in it, then well and good, otherwise it will fall upon you.' When they looked at the mountain, every man among them fell prostrating on his left cheek, while looking with his right eye at the mountain, fearing its fall. Therefore, you do not see a Jew prostrating except on his left cheek, and they say: 'It is the prostration that lifted the punishment from us.' When Moses spread out the tablets containing the Book of Allah, no mountain, tree, or stone remained except that it trembled. Therefore, you do not see a Jew reading the Torah except that it trembles and nods its head for it. 'Take what We have given you' is intended as a saying. That is: and We said, 'Take what We have given you from the Book with strength and determination to bear its hardships and obligations, and remember what is in it of commands and prohibitions and do not forget it.' Or remember what is in it of the promise of great reward, so desire it. It is also possible that it is meant: 'Take what We have given you from the great sign with strength if you are able to do so,' as His saying: 'If you are able to penetrate the regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate.' And remember what is in it of the evidence of the overwhelming power and warning, perhaps you may avoid what you are upon. Ibn Mas'ud read: 'And remember.' And it was read: 'And remember,' in meaning. And remember.
