Commentary
And those who hold fast to the Book have two interpretations. One is that it is raised as a subject, and its predicate is 'Indeed, We do not waste the reward of the doers of good.' The meaning is: Indeed, We do not waste their reward, because the doers of good are in the meaning of those who hold fast to the Book, as in His saying: 'Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds, indeed, We do not waste the reward of one who does good.' The second interpretation is that it is in the genitive case, connected to those who are conscious of Allah, and the statement 'Indeed, We do not waste' is an interruption. And it has been recited: 'hold fast,' with emphasis. The reading of Abu is supported. And those who held fast to the Book. If you say: Holding fast to the Book includes all acts of worship, including the establishment of prayer, so why is it singled out? I say: To highlight the virtue of prayer, as it is the pillar of religion and a distinction between disbelief and faith. And Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, recited: 'And those who held fast to the Book.'
