Commentary
And when it was said to them, and remember when it was said to them. And the village: is Jerusalem. If you say: how did the wording differ here and in Surah Al-Baqarah? I say: there is no harm in the difference of the two expressions if there is no contradiction, and there is no contradiction between His saying, 'Dwell in this village and eat from it,' and His saying, 'So eat,' because if they dwelled in the village, their dwelling would lead to eating from it. They have combined in existence between dwelling in it and eating from it. Whether they brought forward the request for provision upon entering the gate or delayed it, they are united in existence between them. And leaving the mention of abundance does not contradict its affirmation. And His saying, 'We will forgive you your sins, and We will increase the good-doers,' is a promise of two things: forgiveness and increase. And omitting the conjunction does not negate that, for it is a resumption based on the assumption of the speaker saying: 'And what after forgiveness?' So it was said to him: 'We will increase the good-doers.' Likewise, the increase of 'from them' is an increase of clarification, and 'We sent' and 'We revealed.' And 'they wrong themselves' and 'they commit transgressions' are from one valley. And it was recited: 'He will forgive you your sins,' and 'You will be forgiven your sins.' And 'your sins' and 'your sin' are on the passive form.
