Commentary
The people who were oppressed are the Children of Israel. Pharaoh and his people used to oppress them. And the land: the land of Egypt and the Levant. The Children of Israel ruled it after the Pharaohs and the giants, and they managed it as they wished in its eastern and western parts. We blessed it with fertility and abundance of provisions. The saying of your Lord is the best. His saying, 'And We want to bestow favor upon those who were oppressed in the land,' up to His saying, 'what they were fearing.' The best: the feminine form of the best is a description of the word. And the meaning of 'it has been completed upon the Children of Israel' is that it has passed upon them and continued, from your saying: it has been completed upon the matter if it has passed upon it. By their patience, and it is enough for you as an encouragement to patience, and an indication that whoever faces adversity with impatience, Allah will leave him to it. And whoever faces it with patience and awaits victory, Allah has guaranteed him relief. Al-Hasan said: I am amazed at whoever is impatient, how can he be impatient when he has heard His saying? And he recited the verse. The meaning of 'impatient' is to be agitated with anxiety and lack of patience, and he did not have the steadiness of the people of patience. And Asim read in one narration: 'And the words of your Lord have been completed with the best.' And its counterpart is 'from the great signs of his Lord.' What was Pharaoh and his people doing? What they were building and constructing of buildings and palaces, and what they were trellising of gardens, is He who created trellised gardens, or what they were raising of solid buildings in the sky, like the structure of Haman and others. And it was read: 'they trellised,' with a kasra and a damma. Al-Yazidi mentioned that the kasra is more eloquent. And it has reached me that some people read: 'they planted,' from planting trees. And I do not think it is anything but a misreading from him.
