Commentary

So descend from it, from the heaven which is the place of the obedient and humble among the angels, to the earth which is the abode of the disobedient and arrogant among the two weights. So it is not fitting for you to be arrogant in it and disobey. So go out; indeed, you are among the humiliated, among those who are small and dishonored before Allah and His allies because of your arrogance, just as you would say to a man: 'Stand up, humiliated,' if you have insulted him. And in contrast: 'Stand up, rightly guided.' This is because when he displayed arrogance, he was clothed in humiliation. And from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah elevates his wisdom.' And he said: 'Be revived, may Allah revive you.' And whoever is arrogant, Allah will cast him down to the earth. Allah casts him down to the earth. This was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Musannaf. Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, Abdullah ibn Idris, and Sufyan ibn Utbah narrated from Ibn Ajlan from Bakir ibn al-Ashajj from Ma'mar ibn Abi Hayyah from Ubaydullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Adi ibn al-Khayar who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'When a servant humbles himself for Allah, Allah elevates his wisdom and says: Be revived, may Allah revive you. He is small in himself, and great in the eyes of people. And when a servant becomes arrogant, Allah casts him down to the earth. And he says: Be humiliated, may Allah humiliate you. He is great in himself, and small in the eyes of people; he is more despicable to them than a pig.' This was also narrated by al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu'ab through the route of Ali ibn al-Madini from Sufyan.

Some of it has been narrated as elevated, as al-Daraqutni reported in al-‘Ilal from the hadith of Ibn Abbas from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who said: 'There is no son of Adam except that an angel is holding his wisdom. If he raises himself, it is said to the angel: 'Lower his wisdom.' And if he lowers himself, it is said to the angel: 'Raise his wisdom.' He said: 'It is not established.' In it is Ali ibn Zayd who is weak.'
