Commentary
If you say: How did he say to him, 'Then bring it forth' after his saying, 'If you have come with a sign'? I say: Its meaning is, if you have come from the one who sent you with a sign, then bring it to us and present it to me so that your claim may be validated and your truthfulness established. A clear serpent, manifest in its nature, there is no doubt that it is a serpent. It was narrated that it was a male serpent, hairy, with its mouth wide open, between its jaws eighty cubits long. It placed its lower jaw on the ground and its upper jaw on the wall of the palace, then it turned towards Pharaoh to seize him. Pharaoh jumped from his bed and fled, and he had an accident, whereas he had not had one before that. The people fled and shouted, and it charged at the people, causing them to flee, and twenty-five thousand of them died, some killing others. Pharaoh entered the house and shouted: O Moses, take it, and I will send with you the Children of Israel. So Moses took it and it returned to being a staff. If you say: What does 'for those who look' relate to? I say: It relates to 'white.' The meaning is: If it is white for the onlookers, it can only be white for the onlookers if its whiteness is an extraordinary whiteness, beyond the norm, gathering people to look at it as onlookers gather for wonders. And it is narrated that he showed Pharaoh his hand and said: What is this? He said: Your hand. Then he put it into his pocket while wearing a woolen garment and took it out, and it was white with a luminous whiteness that outshone the sunlight. And Moses, peace be upon him, was dark-skinned, very deep in complexion.
