And We did not find for most of them any covenant. The pronoun refers to people in general, meaning that most of them broke the covenant of Allah and His pact in faith and piety. And if We found, indeed the matter and the discussion is that We found most of them to be disobedient, deviating from obedience. And the verse is an interruption. It is permissible that the pronoun refers to the mentioned nations, and that they were when they made a covenant with Allah in hardship and fear, saying, 'If You save us, we will surely believe.' Then when He saved them, they broke their promise, as the people of Pharaoh said to Moses, blessings and peace be upon him: 'If You remove the torment from us, we will surely believe in You,' until His saying: 'Then they break their promise.' And the existence means knowledge, as in your saying: 'I found Zaid to be trustworthy,' evidenced by the entry of 'if' in its light form and the distinguishing 'lam.' And this is only permissible in the subject and the predicate, and the actions that enter upon them.
