Tafsir for verses: 68:48, 68:49, 68:50
48So, remain patient with your Lord’s judgment, and be not like the Man of the Fish, he cried out while he was in anguish. 49Had not a favour from His Lord come to his help, he would have been cast in the wilderness in a reproachable state. 50Then his Lord chose him, and made him one of the righteous.

Commentary

For the judgment of your Lord, which is to give them respite and delay your victory over them. And do not be like the companion of the fish, meaning: Yunus, blessings and peace be upon him, when he called out from the belly of the fish while he was choked with rage, filled with anger, like the skin of a water skin when it is filled. The meaning is: there should not be found in you what was found in him of annoyance and anger, so that you are tested by his trial.

It is good to remind of the action to separate the pronoun in his recovery. Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas'ud read: he recovered. Al-Hasan read: he was recovered, meaning: he was being recovered in the narration of the past state, meaning: if it were not said about him that he was being recovered, as it is said: Zaid was about to stand but so-and-so prevented him, meaning: it was said about him that he would stand. The meaning is: it was expected from him to stand.

And the favor of his Lord: that He bestowed upon him success for repentance and accepted his repentance. He relied in the answer to 'if it were not for' on the state, meaning his saying: while he is blameworthy, meaning that his state was contrary to blame when he was cast out in the open. If it were not for his repentance, his state would have been blameworthy. It has been narrated that this was revealed at Uhud when what happened to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, occurred, and he wanted to invoke against those who fled. It was said: when he wanted to invoke against Thaqif. And it was read: a mercy from his Lord, so his Lord chose him and gathered him to Him, and brought him close by accepting his repentance, as He said: Then his Lord chose him and accepted his repentance and guided him and made him among the righteous, meaning among the prophets. And from Ibn Abbas: Allah returned to him the revelation and interceded for him regarding himself and his people.
