Commentary
If you say: What does the باء (ba) in بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ relate to, and what is its position? I say: It relates to مجنون (majnoon) in the negative. As for the saying: You are by the grace of Allah عقل (aql), it is established in both affirmation and negation, just as in the saying: Zayd ضرب (daraba) 'Amr, and ما ضرب (ma daraba) Zayd 'Amr: the action works in both affirmation and negation as one action. Its position is نصب (nasb) as a حال (hal), as if it is said: You are not مجنون (majnoon), being favored by it. The باء (ba) does not prevent مجنون (majnoon) from working in what precedes it, because it is extra for the confirmation of the negation. The meaning is to reject what the disbelievers of Mecca attributed to him of enmity and envy, and that it is from the grace of Allah upon him for his sound intellect and nobility that is required for the qualification for prophethood. By the house وَإِنَّ لَكَ (and indeed for you) to bear that and to swallow the bitterness in it and to be patient with it, there is indeed a reward for you that is non-ending, not cut off, like His saying عَطاءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٍ (a gift that is not cut off) or not begrudged upon you. For it is a reward that is deserved due to your actions, and it is not a favor that is initiated, rather favors are bestowed, not rewards for actions.
