Commentary
Is there anyone who is pointed to from the crowds and it is said, 'This is the one who is an army for you, supporting you against Allah if He sends upon you His punishment'? Or is there anyone who is pointed to and it is said, 'This is the one who provides for you; if He withholds His provision'? And this is on the condition. It is permissible that it refers to all the idols due to their belief that they protect them from calamities and provide for them by the blessing of their gods. So they are like the supporting army and the provider. And similar to this is His saying, 'Or do they have gods that defend them against Us?' Rather, they persisted in arrogance and aversion; rather, they continued in stubbornness and straying from the truth due to its heaviness upon them, so they did not follow it.
