Commentary
If you both repent, it is a speech directed to Hafsa and Aisha in a manner of turning, to make it more effective in admonishing them.
And from Ibn Abbas: I was always eager to ask Umar about them until he performed Hajj and I performed Hajj with him. When we were on part of the way, he turned and I turned with him with the water container. I poured water on his hand, and he performed ablution. I said: Who are they? He said:
How strange, O Ibn Abbas - as if he disliked what I asked him about - then he said: They are Hafsa and Aisha. It has indeed deviated your hearts, for there has been found from you what necessitates repentance, which is the inclination of your hearts away from the obligation of being sincere to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, in loving what he loves and hating what he hates. Ibn Mas'ud read: Indeed, your hearts have deviated.
And if they both conspire against him and cooperate against him with that which displeases him, from excessive jealousy and revealing his secrets, he will not lack for one who supports him. And how can the one who conspires against Allah know his protector and supporter? And the addition of 'He' indicates that his support is a firm determination of his determinations, and that He undertakes that by Himself, and Gabriel is the head of the cherubim.
And mentioning him alongside him is a singular mention among the angels, in honor of him and in showing his status with Him, and the righteous of the believers, meaning: everyone who believes and does righteous deeds. And from Said ibn Jubair: Whoever is innocent among them from hypocrisy. It is said: the prophets, and it is said: the companions. And it is said: the caliphs among them.
If you say: Is the righteous of the believers singular or plural? I say: It is singular intended for the plural, like your saying: This righteous one among the people does not do this, you mean the kind, like your saying: None of those who are righteous among them does it. And similar to your saying: I was in the gathering and the present.
And it is permissible that its origin is: the righteous of the believers with the conjunction, so it was written without the conjunction according to the wording, because the wording of the singular and the plural is the same in it, as some things have come in the Mushaf where the wording governs the writing without the arrangement of the letters. And the angels, due to their numerousness, and the filling of the heavens with their multitudes, after that, after the support of Allah and His law and the righteous of the believers, is a supporting army for him, as if they are one hand against whoever opposes him. How can the conspiracy of two women against those who are his supporters reach?
If you say: His saying 'after that' is to glorify the angels and their support. And the support of Allah, Gabriel, and the righteous of the believers has preceded, and the support of Allah, the Exalted, is greater and greater. I say: The support of the angels is part of the support of Allah, so it is as if He preferred His support through them and their support over other forms of His support, due to their virtue over all His creation.
