Commentary
Some of his wives was Hafsa. And the hadith that was revealed to her: the hadith of Maria and the leadership of the two Shaykhs, she informed it and disclosed it to Aisha. And it was read: she informed it and Allah made the hadith apparent to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding the hadith, meaning: regarding its disclosure through the tongue of Gabriel. It was said: Allah made the hadith apparent to the Prophet, glorified and exalted is He, from the appearance by which He informed him of some of the hadith out of generosity. Sufyan said: The act of overlooking has always been a characteristic of the noble. And it was read: He informed some of it, meaning: He passed over it, from your saying to the wrongdoer: I will certainly inform you of that, and you have known what you did. And from it: Those are the ones whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, and it is much in the Qur'an, and its consequence was his divorce of her. And it was said: The known is the hadith of leadership, and the one that is ignored is the hadith of Maria: It was narrated that he, blessings and peace be upon him, said to her: Did I not tell you to keep it secret from me? She said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I could not help myself out of joy for the honor that Allah has bestowed upon her father. If you say: Why was it not said: So when she informed some of them and he informed her of some of it? I say: The purpose is not to clarify who was informed and who was known, but rather it is to mention the wrongdoing of Hafsa in the existence of the informing and disclosing it from her, and that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, with his generosity and forbearance, did not find from him except the informing of some of it, which is the hadith of leadership. Do you not see that when the aim in his saying was: So when he informed her of it, she said: Who informed you of this? He mentioned the informant, how he came with his pronoun.
