Commentary
Indeed, among the spouses are spouses who oppose their husbands and argue with them and bring harm upon them. Among the children are children who oppose their fathers and disobey them and cause them distress and harm. So beware of them; the pronoun refers to the enemy or to the spouses and children all together. That is, since you know that these do not lack an enemy, be cautious of them and do not feel secure from their evils and harm. And if you pardon them when you see enmity from them and do not respond to them in kind, then Allah will forgive your sins and expiate for you. It is said that some people wanted to migrate from Mecca, but their spouses and children discouraged them, saying: 'You will leave us and abandon us.' They felt compassion for them and stayed. When they later migrated and saw those who had preceded them had gained understanding in the religion, they wanted to punish their spouses and children, so they were encouraged to forgive. It is said that they said to them: 'Where are you going, leaving your homeland, your tribe, and your wealth?' They became angry with them and said: 'If Allah gathers us in the land of migration, we will not do you any good.' When they migrated, they prevented them from good, so they were urged to forgive them and to return to them kindness and connection. It is said that 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i had family and children. Whenever he wanted to go out for battle, they would cling to him and cry to him and soften his heart, so he was inclined to their harm. Then this verse was revealed:
A trial and a test, because they lead to sin and punishment, and there is no greater trial than these. Do you not see His saying: 'Indeed, with Allah is a great reward.'
And in the hadith, 'A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said:
