Commentary
Abdullah ibn Ubayy was a tall, handsome man, eloquent, and with a fluent tongue. A group of hypocrites were like him, and they were the leaders of the city. They would attend the gathering of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, leaning against him, and they had boldness in their appearances and eloquence in their speech. It was said: 'They would sit with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and lean in the gathering, and they had boldness in their appearances and eloquence in their speech.' They think that every person who shouts against them, may Allah curse them, is a call against them. It is a request from His essence that He curses them and humiliates them. Or it is a teaching for the believers to call against them with that. How are they turned away? How do they deviate from the truth? This is a wonder at their ignorance and misguidance.
