Tafsir for verse: 60:13
13O you who believe, do not have friendship with a people with whom Allah is angry. They have despaired from the Hereafter as the infidels have despaired from those (buried) in the graves.

Commentary

It is narrated that some of the poor Muslims were befriending the Jews to obtain from their fruits. Mahmoud said, "A group of weak Muslims had allied with the Jews to gain from their fruits, so this verse was revealed, and the intended meaning of the disbelievers is the polytheists..." Ahmad said, "Al-Zamakhshari mentioned in his commentary on the verse 'And the two seas are not alike...' to the verse 'And from all, you eat tender meat' that the end of the verse is an aside, which is a genre of rhetoric categorized by its scholars. This verse of Al-Mumtahana could very well belong to this genre, as it criticizes the Jews and continues the criticism by denouncing the polytheists in a fine manner of association. This cannot be found in the asides of eloquent speakers in a better or more suitable way. Among the examples that initiated this genre is the saying: 'When a young man fears Allah and obeys Him... there is no harm in him even if he has committed a sin.' And the saying: 'If I am lying about what I have told you... I have escaped like Harith bin Hisham.' Leaving loved ones to fight for them... and escaping with the head of a shield and a bridle." They were told, "Do not ally with a people who have incurred wrath upon themselves, who have despaired of having a share in the Hereafter due to their stubbornness against the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, while they know that he is the Messenger described in the Torah, just as the disbelievers have despaired of their dead being resurrected and returning to life. It was said that 'from the companions of the graves' clarifies the disbelievers, meaning: just as the disbelievers who were buried have despaired of the good of the Hereafter, because they have realized the ugliness of their condition and the bad outcome for them. From the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Mumtahana will have the believing men and women as intercessors for him on the Day of Resurrection.' This was narrated by Al-Thalabi, Ibn Mardawayh, and Al-Wahidi through their chains to Abu bin Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him.
