Commentary
Guardians, angels who preserve your deeds, and they are the noble writers. And from Abu Hatim al-Sijistani, he used to write down everything that Al-Asma'i would utter of the benefits of knowledge, until he said about him: You are like the guardians, you write the triviality of the word. Abu Hatim said: This too is something that should be written. If you say: Allah, the Exalted, is self-sufficient by His knowledge from the writing of the angels, what is their benefit? I say: There is kindness for the servants in it, because if they know that Allah is watchful over them and that the angels, who are the noblest of His creation, are assigned to them, preserving their deeds and writing them in scrolls that will be presented before the witnesses on the Day of Resurrection, this would deter them from the vile and keep them away from evil. Our messengers took his soul, meaning they completed his spirit, and they are the Angel of Death and his assistants. And from Mujahid: The earth was made for him like a basin, taking whoever it takes. And there is no household except that it circles around them twice every day. And it was recited: 'Tawafāh.' It is permissible for it to be in the past tense and present tense, meaning 'He takes his soul.' And they may neglect with emphasis and without emphasis, for neglecting means being slow and delaying beyond the limit, and excess means going beyond the limit, meaning they do not decrease from what they were commanded or increase in it. Then they were returned to Allah, meaning to His judgment and recompense, their Lord, their Master who oversees their affairs, the Truth, the Just, who does not judge except by the truth. Indeed, to Him belongs the judgment on that Day; there is no judgment for anyone else. And He is the swiftest of accountants, not preoccupied by one account from another. And it was recited 'al-Haqq' in the accusative as praise, like saying: Praise be to Allah, the Truth.
