Commentary
And the Day We gather them, it is stated that the meaning is: And the Day We gather them was such and such, and it was left to remain ambiguous, which is part of the warning. Where are your partners? That is, your deities that you made partners with Allah.
And His saying: Those whom you used to claim means that you claimed them to be partners, so the two objects were omitted. It was recited: He gathers them, then says, with the pronoun in both cases. And it is said to them in a manner of reproach, and it is possible that they see them, but they will not benefit them, nor will there be from them what they hoped for in terms of intercession. It is as if they are hidden from them, and they are prevented from them at the time of reproach, so they miss them at the moment they had hoped for, and they see the place of their disgrace and regret. Their trial is their disbelief. The meaning is: then the outcome of their disbelief was not [as they hoped].
Mahamud said: 'Their trial is their disbelief, and the meaning is then the outcome of their disbelief ...' Ahmad said: And in the verse is a clear proof that reporting something contrary to what it is is a lie, even if the reporter does not know that his report contradicts what he has reported. Do you not see that He made their reporting and disavowal a lie, although He, the Most High, informed that they were lost from what they used to fabricate, that is, they were deprived of knowledge at that time in astonishment and confusion, yet this did not lift the label of lying from them.
They adhered to it throughout their lives, fought for it, boasted about it, and said: The religion of our forefathers—except for their denial and disavowal of it, and swearing to disassociate from adhering to it. It is possible that it is meant: then their only response was to say, and it is called a trial because it is a lie. It was recited: 'be' with the letter 'ta' and 'their trial' in the accusative. The feminine was used because the news is feminine, as in the saying: Who was your mother?
It was recited with the pronoun and the trial in the accusative. And with the pronoun and the letter 'ta' with the trial in the nominative. And it was recited: Our Lord, in the accusative as a call, and He was lost from them what they used to fabricate, that is, they fabricated His divinity and intercession. If you say:
How can they lie when they are exposed to the realities of matters and that lying and denial have no benefit? I say: The one being tested speaks what benefits him and what does not benefit him without distinguishing between them due to confusion and astonishment. Do you not see them saying: Our Lord, take us out of it, for if we return, we are indeed wrongdoers, and they were certain of eternity and did not doubt it, and they called out: O Malik, let your Lord decide for us, and they knew that He would not decide against them. As for the saying of those who say:
Its meaning is: We were not polytheists in our own eyes, and we did not know that we were wrong in our belief, and interpreting His saying: Look how they lied against themselves means in this world is a stretch and a distortion of the clearest speech to what is unclear and an imposition, because the meaning they went to is not what this speech translates or corresponds to, and it is far removed from it.
And I do not know what he does with his interpretation of His saying, the Most High: The Day Allah will resurrect them all, and they will swear to Him as they swear to you, and they think that they are on something. Indeed, they are the liars, after His saying: And they swear to a lie while they know. Thus, their lying in the Hereafter is likened to their lying in this world.
