Commentary
Those to whom We gave the Book, meaning the Jews and the Christians, know the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, by his attributes and description that are established in the two Books, with a pure knowledge, just as they know their own children by their features and descriptions. They do not confuse him with others. This is a testimony for the people of Makkah by the knowledge of the People of the Book about him and the validity of his Prophethood. Then he said, 'Those who have lost themselves,' from the polytheists and from the denying People of the Book, for they do not believe in him. They combined two contradictory matters: they lied about Allah with what they have no proof for, and they denied what has been established with clear evidence and sound proof, as they said, 'If Allah had willed, we would not have associated partners [with Him], nor would our forefathers.' And they said, 'Allah commanded us with it,' and they said, 'The angels are the daughters of Allah,' and 'These are our intercessors with Allah.' They attributed to Him the prohibition of the البحائر and السوائب, and they went on to deny the Qur'an and the miracles, calling them magic, and they did not believe in the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him.
