Their apparent saying is: 'I was angry at nothing,' and if he sees something other than nothing, he thinks it is a man—so that the term 'thing' does not apply except to what exists. For if the term 'thing' were to encompass everything that can be known, whether it is non-existence, existence, possible, or impossible, it would not be true to say that a matter is not a thing. The matter in this regard is close. It applies to everything that can be known and reported about, so it encompasses the eternal, the substance, the attribute, the impossible, and the upright. Therefore, it is correct to say about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'a thing unlike other things,' as if you said: 'a known unlike other knowns,' and it is not correct to say: 'a body unlike bodies.'
