That you say out of dislike to say about two groups, meaning the people of the Torah and the people of the Gospel. The origin is: And if we were neglectful of studying them, noting that the 'he' is the pronoun of the matter about their studying, meaning we did not know like their studying, we would have been more guided than them due to the sharpness of our minds, the clarity of our understanding, and the abundance of our memorization of the days of the Arabs, their events, their speeches, their poetry, their rhythms, and their proverbs, while we are unlettered. And it was read: that they say: or they say, with the yā' (ي) has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, a rebuke for them, and it is on the reading of the one who read 'they say' in the third person is better, due to the shift in focus. The meaning is: If I believed you in what you were counting from yourselves, then a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, so the condition was omitted, and it is one of the best omissions. So who is more unjust than one who denies the signs of Allah after he has known their truth and authenticity, or has been able to know that and turns away from it, so he goes astray and leads others astray. We will surely punish those who turn away from Our signs with the worst of punishment, as in His saying: Those who disbelieved and turned away from the path of Allah, We will increase them in punishment above the punishment.
