Commentary
'The one with claws' refers to that which has a claw from an animal or bird. Some of the creatures with claws were lawful for them. When they wronged, it was made unlawful for them. Thus, the prohibition encompassed every creature with claws, as evidenced by His saying: 'Because of the wrongdoing of those who were Jews, We prohibited them good things which had been lawful for them.' And His saying: 'And from the cattle and the sheep, We prohibited their fats,' is like saying: 'From Zayd, I took his wealth,' meaning the addition of the connection. The meaning is that He prohibited them the flesh of every creature with claws and its fat and everything from it. The cattle and sheep were left permissible, and only their pure fats were prohibited, which are the thurub and the fats of the kidneys. And His saying: 'Except what their backs carry' means except what is included in the backs and the sides from the sakhra or the hawaya, or what is included in the intestines or what is mixed with bone, which is the fat of the buttock. It was said that the hawaya is an apposition to their fats. And 'or' is in the place of saying: 'I sat with al-Hasan or Ibn Sirin.' That punishment, We recompensed them for their wrongdoing due to their oppression. This verse was revealed regarding those who disbelieved and slandered Allah, and the warning to the disbeliever is agreed upon and not to be rejected. The people of the Sunnah, even if they say that it is permissible to pardon the sinful believer, do not say that it is obligatory, nor is it necessary for them. For Allah, the Exalted, when He warned the sinful believers, conditioned the occurrence of the warning upon His will, and informed that He forgives whom He wills among them. Therefore, we believe that every sinful believer is subject to His will. And where He unleashed His warning upon them in some apparent forms, it is carried upon the restricted. Thus, it does not necessitate for them to believe in the contrary in the report. Al-Zamakhshari only revolves around obligating them that, and how could he? And indeed, We are truthful in what We promised the sinners; We do not fail in it, just as We do not fail in what We promised the people of obedience. So when they disobeyed and wronged, We attached to them the warning and made the punishment lawful for them. If they deny you in that and claim that Allah is All-Encompassing in mercy, and that He does not hold accountable for wrongdoing and fails the warning out of generosity and kindness, then say to them: 'Your Lord is the Possessor of a vast mercy for the people of His obedience, and His punishment is not turned away from the criminal people despite His vast mercy. So do not be deceived by the hope of His mercy from the fear of His wrath.'
