'The status' is a source from which it is said: 'He was established in his status if he became firmly established.' In the sense of place, it is said: place and status, and standing and station. And His saying, 'Work according to your status,' can mean: work according to your ability and utmost capability. Or work according to your direction and condition in which you are. It is said to a man when he is commanded to remain in his state: 'On your status, O so-and-so,' meaning remain as you are and do not deviate from it. 'Indeed, I am working' means I am acting according to my status that I am upon. The meaning is: remain steadfast in your disbelief and enmity towards me, for I am steadfast in Islam and in enduring you. 'So you will know which of us will have the praiseworthy outcome.' The manner of this command is similar to His saying, 'Do what you wish,' which is a form of letting go, and the recording on the commanded one that he will not bring forth anything but evil. It is as if he is commanded to do so, and it is an obligation upon him that he cannot escape from and act contrary to it. If you say: What is the position of 'who'? I say it is in the nominative if it means 'any' and is attached to the action of knowledge. Or it is in the accusative if it means 'the one who.' And the outcome of the house is the good outcome for which Allah, the Exalted, created this house. This is a subtle way of warning, containing fairness in speech and good manners, while also including severe warning, with certainty that the one warning is correct and the one warned against is false.
