Commentary
Is it other than Allah that I seek as a judge regarding the intention of the saying? Say, O Muhammad: Is it other than Allah that I seek a judge to decide between me and you, and to distinguish the truthful among us from the false? He is the One who has sent down to you the miraculous Book, detailed and clear in it the distinction between truth and falsehood, and the testimony of my truthfulness and your falsehood. Then He supported the evidence that the Qur'an is true by the knowledge of the People of the Book that it is true, for it confirms what is with them and agrees with it. So do not be among the doubters, as in His saying: 'And do not be among the polytheists.' Or do not be among the doubters regarding the fact that the People of the Book know that it has been revealed with truth, and let not the denial of most of them and their disbelief in it cause you doubt. It is possible that 'do not be among the doubters' is addressed to everyone, meaning that if the evidence for its truth and honesty is supported, then no one should doubt it. It is said that the address is to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, as an address to his nation.
