Commentary
And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy. Just as We allowed you to have enemies, so We did with those before you from the prophets and their enemies. We did not prevent them from enmity, for it is part of the trial that is the reason for the emergence of steadfastness and patience. And the abundance of reward and recompense. And the devils are established as a substitute for enemies. Or as if they are both objects like the saying, 'And they made for Allah partners from the jinn, inspiring some of them to others.' The devils of the jinn whisper to the devils of mankind. And likewise, some of the jinn to some of them and some of mankind to some of them. And from Malik ibn Dinar: The devil of mankind is more severe upon me than the devil of the jinn, for when I seek refuge with Allah, the devil of the jinn leaves me, while the devil of mankind comes to me and drags me into sins openly, with the embellishment of words that he beautifies with speech and whispering and enticing to sins, and he deceives with illusions, trickery, and taking one by surprise. And if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it. That is, they would not have opposed you, or they would not have inspired some of them to others with embellished speech to keep them from their affairs.
