Commentary
The Jews and the hypocrites would whisper to one another and exchange glances when they saw the believers, wanting to provoke them. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, forbade them, but they returned to similar actions. Their whispering was a sin and aggression against the believers, and it was a call to disobedience of the Messenger and opposition to him. It was recited: 'they whisper with sin and aggression,' with a broken 'ayn. And the disobedience to the Messenger is: 'They greet you with that which Allah has not greeted you.' This means they say in greeting you: 'Death be upon you, O Muhammad.' And 'death' means 'the death.' And Allah, the Exalted, says: 'And peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen.' And 'O Messenger' and 'O Prophet': 'If Allah were to punish us for what we say.' They used to say: 'What is wrong with him? If he is a prophet, he does not call down upon us until Allah punishes us for what we say.' So Allah, the Exalted, said: 'Hell is sufficient for them as punishment.'
