Commentary
You will not find a people, in the sense of imagination. It is impossible to find a people of believers who ally with the polytheists. The purpose of this is that it should not be the case, and it is right that it should be avoided and not found at all. This is an exaggeration in the prohibition against it and a warning against mingling with it. It is a recommendation to be firm in distancing oneself from the enemies of Allah and to be cautious of mixing and associating with them. This is further emphasized and reinforced by His saying: 'Even if they were their fathers,' and by His saying: 'Those are the ones in whose hearts He has written faith,' and by contrasting His saying: 'Those are the party of Satan,' with His saying: 'Those are the party of Allah.' You will not find anything more integral to sincerity than allying with the friends of Allah and opposing His enemies. Rather, this is sincerity itself. 'He has written faith in their hearts' affirms it in them by what He has guided them to and opened their chests for, and He has supported them with a spirit from Him. This is a kindness from Him that has enlivened their hearts. It is possible that the pronoun refers to faith, meaning: with a spirit of faith, as it is in itself a spirit for the life of hearts. Al-Thawri said: They used to think that it was revealed about those who accompany the ruler. And from Abdul Aziz ibn Abu Rawad: He met Al-Mansur during Tawaf, and when he recognized him, he fled from him and recited it. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, he used to say: 'O Allah, do not make for a wicked person or a corrupt person any favor with me.' [This was mentioned by the author of Al-Firdaws from the hadith of Muadh. Ibn Mardawayh narrated it from the narration of Ja'far Al-Ahmar from Kathir ibn Atiyyah from a man who said the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, and he did not mention 'nor for a corrupt person.'] For I found in what was revealed to me: 'You will not find a people.' It was narrated that it was revealed about Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, because Abu Quhafa insulted the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and he struck him a blow from which he fell. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Did you do that?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do not do it again.' He said: 'By Allah, if the sword were near me, I would have killed him.' [Al-Thalabi narrated it from Ibn Jurayj who said: 'I was informed that Abu Quhafa ... and he mentioned it.'] It was said about Abu Ubaidah ibn Al-Jarrah: He killed his father, Abdullah Al-Jarrah, on the day of Uhud. And about Abu Bakr: He called his son on the day of Badr to challenge, and he said to the Messenger of Allah: 'Let me charge into the fray.' The Messenger said: 'Enjoy yourself with your own self, O Abu Bakr. Do you not know that you are to me like my hearing and my sight?' [This is in the Tafsir of Muqatil ibn Hayyan from Murrah Al-Hamdani from Ibn Mas'ud, and Al-Thalabi mentioned it from the Tafsir of Muqatil.] And regarding Mus'ab ibn Umair: He killed his brother, Ubaid ibn Umair, on the day of Uhud. And regarding Umar: He killed his uncle, Al-As ibn Hisham, on the day of Badr. And regarding Ali, Hamzah, and Ubaidah ibn Al-Harith: They killed Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi'ah, and Al-Walid ibn Utbah on the day of Badr. From the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Mujadila will be written among the party of Allah on the Day of Resurrection.' [This was narrated by Al-Thalabi and Ibn Mardawayh and Al-Wahidi with their chains to Abu ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him.]
