Commentary
Expand in the gatherings. Let some of you make room for others, from their saying: "Make room for me," meaning: step aside, and do not crowd together. It has also been recited: "Tafasahu." The intended meaning is the gathering of the Messenger of Allah. They used to crowd together in it, competing for closeness to him and eager to listen to his words. It is said that it refers to the gathering of battle, which are the centers of the warriors, as His saying: "Maqa'id lil-qital" (places for fighting). It has also been recited: "Fi al-majalis" (in the gatherings). It is said that a man would come to the row and say: "Tafasahu," but they would refuse due to their eagerness for martyrdom. It has also been recited: "Fi al-majlis" (in the gathering) - with the 'l' opened: it refers to sitting, meaning: make room in your sitting and do not feel constrained in it. Allah will make room for you in everything that people seek to have room in, such as space, sustenance, comfort, the grave, and others. "Anshuzu" means: rise to make room for those coming. Or rise from the gathering of the Messenger of Allah if you are commanded to rise from it, and do not tire the Messenger of Allah by leaning in it. Or rise to prayer, jihad, and good deeds if you are urged to rise, and do not discourage or slacken. Allah will elevate the believers by obeying His commands and the commands of His Messenger, especially the scholars among them. [Mahran said: "In it is a generalization followed by a specification for the scholars... etc." Ahmad said: "In the reward of elevating ranks, there is a connection to the action because the command is to make room in the gathering so that they do not compete for closeness to the elevated place around him, blessings and peace be upon him, and feel constrained. When the one who obeys this lowers himself from what he competes for in elevation, in obedience and humility, he is rewarded for his humility by being elevated in ranks, as His saying: "Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will elevate him." Then when it is known that the people of knowledge are such that they deserve, in their own eyes and in the eyes of people, the elevation of their gatherings, He specified them in mention at the reward to make it easier for them to abandon their elevation in the gathering in humility before Allah, glorified and exalted is He.]
With knowledge, it becomes a humiliation. And from Al-Zubayri, he said: 'Knowledge is a reminder.' Al-Zubayri is Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr, a freedman of Banu Asad, and he is not from the offspring of Al-Zubayr bin Al-Awwam, as mentioned in Al-Hidayah and Al-Irshad, as noted in the margin. Knowledge is a reminder, and only men are fond of it.
