Commentary
Those who are made successors in it means that the wealth in your hands is indeed the wealth of Allah by His creation and establishment of it. He has merely entrusted you with it and allowed you to enjoy it, and made you successors in managing it. Thus, it is not truly your wealth. You are in it merely like agents and representatives. So spend from it in the rights of Allah, and let spending from it be easy for you, just as it is easy for a man to spend from the wealth of another when he is permitted to do so. Or He has made you successors from those who were before you in what is in your hands, by bequeathing it to you. So consider their condition, as it has passed from them to you, and it will be passed from you to those after you. So do not be stingy with it, and benefit yourselves by spending from it. Do not disbelieve in the meaning of the action regarding your wealth, as you say: your wealth is standing, meaning: what are you doing standing, that is: and what is wrong with you disbelieving in Allah. The 'and' in 'and the Messenger calls you' is the conjunction of the state, so they are two interwoven states. And it has been recited: 'And what is wrong with you that you do not believe in Allah while the Messenger is calling you?' The meaning is: what excuse do you have for not believing while the Messenger calls you to it and alerts you to it and recites to you the Book that speaks with proofs and arguments? And before that, Allah had taken your covenant regarding faith: when He instilled in you minds. [Mawlid said: 'Taking the covenant is expressed by the instilling of minds in them... etc.' Ahmad said: 'And there is no harm in interpreting taking the covenant as mentioned by Allah in another verse, as He says: 'And when your Lord took from the Children of Adam from their backs their descendants and made them testify against themselves: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes.' And it may cause me doubt that he denies many of such phenomena and diverts them from their realities, despite their rational possibility and their occurrence by hearing. The principle you should rely on is that whatever the mind permits and is confirmed by hearing must be taken at face value, and Allah is the Grantor of success.] And He has set for you the proofs, and enabled you to reflect, and removed your excuses. So if you have no excuse left after the proofs of reason and the alerting of the Messenger, what is wrong with you that you do not believe if you are believers by necessity? For this necessity cannot be exceeded. And it has been recited: 'He took your covenant,' [The statement 'And it has been recited: He took your covenant' indicates that the recitation in the passive form is more famous.] in the active form, which is Allah, the Exalted.
