The Day He will say, "Look at us!" They will say, "Wait for us!" because they are hastened to Paradise like the flashing lightning on riders who are being rushed. These are walking. And they say, "Look at us!" because when they look at them, they will greet them with their faces, and the light is before them, so they will illuminate themselves with it. And it has been recited: "Wait for us!" from the glance, which is the granting of respite. He made their delay in proceeding until they catch up with them a respite for them to obtain light from you. This means that they will catch up with them and be illuminated by it. It was said, "Return behind you and seek a light!" This is a dismissal for them and mockery of them, meaning: "Return to the standing place where we were given this light and seek it there, from there you will obtain it." Or, "Return to the world and seek a light by obtaining its cause, which is faith." Or, "Return disappointed and move away from us, and seek another light, for you have no access to this light." They knew that there is no light behind them, but it is a disappointment and despair for them. So a barrier was placed between them, a wall between the believers and the hypocrites, a separating wall between a part of Paradise and a part of Hell. It was said: It is the A'raf. For that wall, there is a door for the people of Paradise to enter through. Its inner part is the inner part of the wall or the door, which is the part that leads to Paradise. Its outer part is what appears to the people of Hell from it and from its side, which is the punishment, darkness, and fire. Zayd ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, recited: "So a barrier was placed between them" with the construction indicating the doer. "Did we not used to be with you?" They want to show agreement with them outwardly. "You have harmed yourselves by hypocrisy and destroyed yourselves, and you waited for the believers to fall into calamity. You were deceived by false hopes, the long hopes and the desire for prolonged lives until the command of Allah came, which is death. And the deceiver deceived you about Allah, the deceiver, and the devil deceived you by saying that Allah is Forgiving and Generous and will not punish you. And it has been recited: the deceiver, with the 'dhamma'. A ransom is what one is ransomed with. It is your master. It was said: it is more deserving of you. And the poet said:
"Both openings fled, thinking that he... is the master of fear behind it and before it."
This is from the Mu'allaqat of Labid. He describes a wild cow, "Tawajjast" means she listened. And "tawajjus" means listening. It is said: "Raza the sky" means it made a sound when it rained. So "raz" with the opening means the quiet sound, and with the kasra, it is the name for the quiet sound.
And "raz" means the sound of the companion, which is the hunter, so it frightened her from behind the unseen. And the inclusion of the back in such a construction is an exaggeration in secrecy, because what is behind the back is unknown and one does not know what it is. And the hunter is called a companion in relation to us, not to her, because he is her distress and the cause of her fear, so he made it the essence of the sickness as an exaggeration. And both openings: is the subject. And "you think that he is the master of fear": is the predicate, meaning he is the most deserving of fear from his side. "Behind her and before her": is the predicate for an omitted subject, or it is an alternative to both openings for clarification and explanation, meaning: for them is what is between their legs and what is between their hands. Some interpreted them as two horns in the mountain, and upon that, there is no meaning for the 'lam' of the covenant in them.
And the reality of your master is your place and your residence. It was said: he is worthy of doing such and such, meaning he is deserving of it and is truly so. It was mentioned in the Sahih. (A) That is: your place where it is said he is more deserving of you, as it was said: it is a place for generosity, meaning a place, as the saying goes: he is generous. And it is possible that it means: she is your supporter, meaning there is no supporter for you other than her. The intended meaning is the negation of a supporter altogether. Similar to their saying: So-and-so was afflicted with such and such, so he sought the help of despair.
