Commentary
O assembly of jinn and mankind, as a translation of His saying: O two heavy ones, if you are able to escape from My decree and exit from My dominion and from My heavens and My earth, then do so. Then He said: You will not be able to penetrate except by a power, meaning by strength, force, and domination. And how will that be for you? And similarly, you are not able to escape in the earth nor in the heavens. It has been narrated that the angels, peace be upon them, descend and surround all of creation. When the jinn and mankind see them, they flee, and they do not come to a place except that they find the angels surrounding it. It has been recited: 'shawaaz' and 'nuhas', both with a dammah and a kasrah. 'Shawaaz' is the pure flame. 'Nuhas' is the smoke. And it has been recited: 'You shine like the light of a blazing lamp... Allah did not place any 'nuhas' in it.' [Al-Nabighah Al-Ja'di. 'Al-Saleet' refers to 'Al-Shiraj', and 'did not place' is a circumstantial clause from the lamp. 'Nuhas' is the smoke. The condition for the occurrence of the circumstantial clause from the added to is present, because the light is like its part. And perhaps it describes the face of his beloved, about whom he said: 'When the companion bends her side...'. The verse compares her light to that of a lamp, provided that there is no smoke in it, because the light of her face is likewise. Thus, it is from the desire that is conditioned.] And it was said: molten copper is poured over their heads. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, it is said: When they emerge from their graves, they are driven by 'shawaaz' to the gathering. And it has been recited: 'and nuhas', raised as an addition to 'shawaaz'. And it has been recited: 'and nuhas', genitive as an addition to 'fire'. And it has been recited: 'and nuhas', meaning: 'and we kill by punishment'. And it has been recited: 'We send upon you 'shawaaz' of fire and 'nuhas', so do not resist, do not refuse.
