Commentary
Are your disbelievers, O people of Mecca, better than those disbelievers counted: the people of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and the family of Pharaoh? Are they better in strength, tools, and status in this world, or are they less disbelieving and obstinate? This means that your disbelievers are like those, rather worse than them. Or have you, O people of Mecca, received a declaration in the previous scriptures that whoever disbelieves among you and denies the messengers is safe from the punishment of Allah? So you have relied on that declaration. We are all a united group, our command is united, victorious, and unassailable; we cannot be harmed or oppressed. And it was reported that Abu Jahl struck his horse on the day of Badr, advanced in the ranks, and said: 'We will be victorious today over Muhammad and his companions.' Then the verse was revealed: 'The multitude will be defeated.' Regarding Ikrimah: When this verse was revealed, Umar said: 'Which multitude will be defeated?' When he saw the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, leaping in his armor and saying: 'The multitude will be defeated,' he understood its interpretation. [This was narrated by Abdul Razzaq from Ma'mar from Qatadah, and from Ayoub from Ikrimah, 'that Umar - and he mentioned it.' It was narrated more completely, and it was reported from this source by Ishaq, Al-Tabari, and Ibn Abi Hatim. Al-Tabari also narrated it in Al-Awsat from the narration of Abdul Majid ibn Abi Ruwaad from Ma'mar from Qatadah from Anas from Umar, connected.] 'And they will turn their backs,' meaning their backs, as it was said: 'Eat in some of your bellies to be healthy.' [The explanation of this evidence was mentioned in the first part, page 479, so refer to it if you wish, the corrector.] And it was read: 'the backs' meaning more severe and dreadful. And a calamity is an outrageous matter for one who does not find its remedy, and it is more bitter than defeat, killing, and captivity. And it was read: 'We will defeat the multitude.'
