Commentary
Makki [except for verses 44, 45, and 46 which are Madani] and its verses are 55 [revealed after Al-Tariq]. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'
The splitting of the moon is one of the signs of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and his radiant miracles. From Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the disbelievers asked the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, for a sign, and the moon split into two. [[Agreed upon from the narration of Qatadah from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him.]]
Similarly, from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them. Ibn Abbas said: It split into two halves, one half went away and one half remained. [[Narrated by Abu Nu'aym in Al-Dala'il, from the narration of Al-Kalbi from Abu Salih from him, and in the two Sahihs from him: 'The moon split during the time of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him.']] Ibn Mas'ud said: I saw Mount Hira between the two halves of the moon. [[Narrated by Ibn Mardawayh from the narration of Mansur from Zayd ibn Wahb from Ibn Mas'ud who said: 'By Allah, I saw Mount Hira between the two splits.' And in the two Sahihs from Abu Ma'mar from him: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, at Mina, the moon split into two halves, one half was behind the mountain and the other half was in front of it. He said: Bear witness.' And there are narrations from Ibn Umar in Muslim and from Jubayr ibn Mut'im from Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak, and from Ahmad as well.]]
And from some people: Its meaning is that it will split on the Day of Resurrection. And His saying: 'And if they see a sign, they turn away and say:
