So, do you marvel at this saying, which is the Qur'an, in denial? And do you laugh in mockery and not weep? Weeping and humility are truly due upon you. And it is reported from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, that he did not see anyone laughing after its revelation. [Narrated by Ahmad in Al-Zuhd and Al-Thalabi from the hadith of Saleh ibn Abi Al-Khalil. And Ibn Mardawayh narrated it through the route of Said ibn Jubair from Ibn Abbas with a weak chain.] And it has been recited: 'You marvel, you laugh,' without the conjunction 'and.' And you are [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: samidun] [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: shamikhun] [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: mubarṭimun]. [The term 'shamikhun mubarṭimun' in Al-Sihah means 'to puff up from anger.' And 'samid' refers to one who raises his head in arrogance, and the one who is distracted, and the meaning includes the standing, the silent, and the sorrowful humble. And the term 'sam'ad' with a hamzah means to swell with anger.] It is said: 'distracted and playing.' And some said to his female servant: 'Sing for us.' So prostrate to Allah and worship Him, and do not worship the idols. It is reported from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Najm, Allah grants him ten good deeds for every person who believed in Muhammad and denied him in Mecca.' [Narrated by Al-Thalabi, Ibn Mardawayh, and Al-Wahidi from the hadith of Abu ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him.]
