Commentary
It was recited: "li-yajzi" and "yujza", with the letter yā and the letter nūn in both. Its meaning is that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, created the world and shaped this kingdom for this purpose: which is to reward the good-doer among the accountable and the wrongdoer among them.
It may relate to His saying: "He knows best who has gone astray from His path and He knows best who has been guided" because the result of knowledge of the astray and the guided is their reward for what they did, with punishment for what they did of evil, and with goodness for the good reward, which is Paradise. Or because of what they did of evil and because of the good deeds, like the major sins, meaning the major sins of wrongdoing, because wrongdoing is a category that includes major and minor sins. The major sins are the sins whose punishment is not lifted except by repentance. It was said that they are those whose punishment is greater in relation to the reward of their owner. And the "fawahish" are what is obscene among the major sins, as if he said: and the obscenities among them specifically. And it was recited: "kabeer al-ithm", meaning the major type of it, and it was said: it is associating partners with Allah. And "al-lamam" is what is small and minor. From it: "al-lamam" is a touch of madness, and the stain from it.
And "alam" in a place means little of it remained. And "alam" with food means little of it was eaten. From it:
"The meeting of the friends of purity is little"
meaning: the meeting of the beloved ones whose affection is pure is little, meaning few, so it is a mutual action from "al-ilmam", which is the increase without delay or lingering. And every connection with the women who are self-sufficient in their beauty from adorning themselves with jewelry or the veiled women who remain in their homes, from "ghani" in the place like "rida":
"He established a little of the rights of honor and protection"
meaning something small from the rights of honor and protection, and its application to that is metaphorical, and its reality is: honor and protection and the treaty and the covenant that the two parties to the covenant agree upon, and what a person is reproached for neglecting from the covenant. It is either a mutual action from "dhimmah", or a name for a tool: like a belt and a bond. It may also be used as an adjective for a well with little water, and the plural of "dhimmah" is used. The meaning is that seeing the beloved ones is little, either truly in custom, or a claim and independence for it. And seeing others is much. And in it is a meaning of sadness. And it may be read: "al-damam" with the unmarked letter, which is what is applied to the face to beautify it, and the meaning is that their connection is mere camouflage with no reality to it, and the meaning is based on comparison.
And the intended meaning is the minor sins, and there is no escaping His saying: "except for the minor sins" from being an interrupted exception or a description, like His saying: "If there were in them gods except Allah" as if it were said: the major sins of wrongdoing are not like the minor sins, and gods other than Allah. And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: the minor sins are the glance, the wink, and the kiss. And from al-Suddi: the fleeting thought of sin. And from al-Kalbi: every sin for which Allah has not mentioned a limit or punishment. And from 'Ata: the habit of the soul from time to time.
"Indeed, your Lord is All-Encompassing in Forgiveness" as He forgives the minor sins by avoiding the major sins.
The saying: "He forgives the minor sins by avoiding the major sins" is according to the Mu'tazilah, and according to the people of the Sunnah with that. Or merely by virtue, and so on for what follows. And the major sins by repentance.
"So do not purify yourselves" means do not attribute yourselves to the purity of action and increase in goodness and acts of obedience: or to purity and cleanliness from sins, and do not praise yourselves and belittle yourselves, for Allah knows the pure among you and the pious, first and last, before He brought you forth from the loins of Adam, and before you came forth from the wombs of your mothers. And it was said: there were people who did good deeds and then said: our prayer, our fasting, and our pilgrimage, so it was revealed: and this is if it was out of admiration or showing off. As for the one who believes that what he has done of good deeds is from Allah and by His success and support and did not intend to boast, he is not among those who purify themselves, for delight in obedience is obedience, and mentioning it is gratitude.
