Commentary
Or does man have what he wishes? It is the disjointed one, and the meaning of the hamzah in it is for denial, meaning: man does not have what he wishes. The intended meaning is their hope for the intercession of the deities, which is a wish upon Allah that is far-fetched. It is said: it is their saying: 'And if I were to return to my Lord, indeed I would have with Him the best.' It is also said to be the saying of Al-Walid ibn Al-Mughira: 'I will surely be given wealth and children.' It is also said that it is the wish of some of them to be the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. To Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first life, meaning He is the Owner of both. He gives from them to whom He wills and withholds from whom He wills, and no one has the right to impose anything upon Him regarding either of them.
