44Even if they see a piece falling down from the sky, they would say, “It is a cumulated cloud.” 45So, leave them alone until they face their Day, in which they will be turned unconscious, 46the Day their planning will not benefit them in the least, nor will they be helped. 47And for those who did wrong there is another punishment before that, but most of them do not know.

Commentary

Al-kasf: the piece, and it is the answer to their saying, 'Or will the heaven fall upon us in pieces as you claimed?' He means that due to their extreme tyranny and stubbornness, if We were to cause it to fall upon them, they would say: 'This is a cloud piled up, some of it over others, raining upon us,' and they would not believe that it is a piece falling as punishment. And it has been recited: 'Until they meet and they will be struck down, they will die.' And it has been recited: 'They will be struck down.' It is said: 'He struck him down, so he was struck down,' and that is at the first blow, the blow of striking down. And indeed, for those who have wronged, there is punishment other than that, other than the Day of Resurrection: it is the killing at Badr, the drought for seven years, and the punishment of the grave. And in the Mushaf of Abdullah: 'Other than that, close by.'
