Commentary
They ask each other and converse about their conditions and deeds and what they have earned to attain what is with Allah, being anxious and humble of heart out of fear of Allah. It has also been recited, 'and protect us,' with emphasis, meaning the punishment of the scorching wind, the punishment of the fire and its heat and its blaze. The scorching wind is the hot wind that enters the pores, and it is named after the fire of Hell because it has this characteristic before encountering Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and the return to Him. They mean in this world, we call upon Him, we worship Him, and we ask Him for protection. Indeed, He is the Benefactor, the Good, the Merciful, the One of great mercy, who, when worshipped, rewards, and when asked, responds. It has also been recited: 'that' with the opening, meaning: 'because'.
