Commentary
And in the earth are signs that indicate the Creator, His power, wisdom, and management, as it is spread out like a carpet for what is above it, as He said, 'He who made for you the earth a resting place.' In it are pathways and routes for those who move about in it and walk in its expanses. It is divided: some parts are flat, mountains, deserts, and seas; and there are neighboring sections: some are solid and others are soft, and [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: 'adhā'] and marshy. It is like the fields that are fertilized with various plants and types of trees with different colors, tastes, and scents, all watered by one water. We prefer some of them over others in food, and all are suitable for the needs, benefits, and interests of their inhabitants in their health and ailments. And what is in it of gushing springs, precious minerals, and diverse creatures scattered in its land and sea, differing in forms, shapes, and actions: from wild and domestic animals to insects, and others, for the certain believers who have taken the straight, rational path leading to knowledge. They are observant with clear eyes and penetrating minds. Whenever they see a sign, they recognize the aspect of contemplation in it, thus increasing their faith along with their faith and certainty alongside their certainty. And in yourselves, in the state of its beginning and its transitions from one state to another, and in its inner and outer aspects, are wonders of creation and marvels of creation: in which minds become perplexed. And enough for you are the hearts and what is embedded in them of intellects and what they are distinguished by from various meanings, and with the tongues, and speech, and the articulation of letters, and what is in their composition, arrangement, and subtleties: of the shining signs and clear proofs of the wisdom of the Planner. Consider the hearing, sight, limbs, and all other faculties, and how they come to fulfill what they were created for, and what has been arranged in the limbs from joints for bending and folding. For when one of them becomes stiff, weakness arises, and when it relaxes, humility descends. So blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.
