The restriction is lifted from the believers regarding anything they consume from the delightful foods and their cravings, as long as they fear what is forbidden to them from it, and they believe and remain steadfast in faith and good deeds, and they increase it. Then they fear and believe, and then they remain steadfast in piety and faith. Then they fear and do good, and then they remain steadfast in avoiding sins and doing good deeds, or they do good to people: they should treat them with what Allah has provided them from the good things. It was said that when the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, the companions said: O Messenger of Allah, what about our brothers who died while drinking alcohol and consuming money from gambling? [It was narrated by Ahmad from the narration of Ibn Wahb, the freedman of Abu Huraira, who said: 'Alcohol was prohibited three times. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, came to Medina while they were drinking alcohol and consuming gambling. They asked the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, about that. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: (They ask you about wine and gambling) - the verse. The people said: It has not been prohibited for us, it was only said: there is great sin in it, so they continued to drink alcohol until one day a man from the immigrants prayed the Maghrib prayer and mixed up in his recitation. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: (O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated) - so they used to drink it until one of them would come to prayer while he was sober. Then the verse was revealed: (O you who have believed, indeed, wine and gambling) - the verse. They said: We have stopped, O Lord. The people said: O Messenger of Allah, some people were killed in the way of Allah or died on their beds while they were drinking alcohol and consuming gambling, and Allah has made it an abomination from the work of Satan. So Allah revealed: (There is no blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds) - the verse. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: If it had been prohibited for them, they would have left it as you have left it. Its chain of narration is weak, as it is from the narration of Abu Ma'shar from Abu Wahb. And Abu Ma'shar is weak. Al-Tabari narrated from the hadith of Ali ibn Abi Talha from Ibn Abbas, who said regarding the verse: (There is no blame upon those who have believed) - the verse. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about our brothers who died while they were drinking alcohol and consuming gambling? So Allah revealed the verse. In the agreed-upon narration from Hamad ibn Zayd from Thabit from Anas, he said: 'I was the water bearer for the people in the house of Abu Talha - and their alcohol at that time was Al-Fidhikh. He commanded a caller to announce: 'Indeed, alcohol has been prohibited' - the narration. Some of the people said: So-and-so has been killed and so-and-so and so-and-so while it was in their bellies. Then Allah revealed: (There is no blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds for what they have consumed...) - the verse. It was revealed. This means that the believers have no blame upon them for anything they have consumed from the permissible things as long as they fear the prohibitions, then they fear and believe, then they fear and do good, meaning that those were of this description, praising them and commending their states in faith, piety, and goodness. An example of this is that it could be said to you: Is there any blame on Zaid for what he has done? You would say - and you know that this is a permissible matter -: There is no blame on anyone in the permissible, if he fears the prohibitions and is a believing doer of good, meaning: that Zaid is a pious, believing doer of good and that he is not held accountable for what he has done.
