Commentary
If you say: How did the action of 'hasban' enter upon 'an' which is for confirmation? I say: Their 'hasban' descended due to its strength in their hearts, to the status of knowledge. If you say: Where are the objects of 'hasban'? I say: What is included in the connection of 'an' and 'anna' serves as the two objects, and the meaning is: And the Children of Israel thought that no trial would befall them from Allah, meaning no affliction and punishment in this world and the Hereafter. So they became blind to the religion and deaf when they worshipped the calf. Then they repented from the worship of the calf, and Allah repented to them. Then they became blind and deaf a second time by seeking the impossible and unreasonable in the attributes of Allah, which is [His saying 'and it is the vision']. The Mu'tazila rejected it, and the people of Sunnah permitted it as established in its place. It has been recited: 'They became blind and deaf' with the 'dhamma' on the assumption that Allah made them blind and deaf, meaning He struck them with blindness and deafness, just as it is said: I left him if I struck him with the 'nizak' [the short spear, which is a Persian word that has been Arabized, its original being 'nizah', and the 'h' has been replaced with a 'k']. And I rode him if I struck him with my knee. Many of them is a replacement for the pronoun: or according to their saying: 'They ate me the fleas', or it is the news of a deleted subject, meaning those are many of them.
