Commentary
He clarifies for you either that the clarifier is the religion and the laws, and he omitted it due to the clarity of what the Messenger brought to clarify it. Or he means what you were concealing, and he omitted it because it was mentioned earlier. Or it is not specified, and the meaning is: He provides you with the clarification, and its place is in the accusative case, meaning clarifying for you. And 'on a period' is related to 'came to you,' meaning He came to you at a time of slackness in sending the Messengers and a cessation of revelation. 'So that you say' is disliked for you to say, 'Indeed, there has come to you' is related to something omitted, meaning do not excuse yourselves, for indeed, there has come to you. It is said that there were five hundred and sixty years between Jesus and Muhammad, blessings of Allah be upon them. It is said six hundred. It is said four hundred and more than sixty. And from Al-Kalbi: there were one thousand and seven hundred years between Moses and Jesus, and a thousand prophets, and between Jesus and Muhammad, blessings of Allah be upon them, there were four prophets. Three from the Children of Israel, and one from the Arabs: Khalid ibn Sinan Al-Absi. And the meaning is: the favor upon them, and that the Messenger was sent to them when the traces of revelation had vanished, most in need of it, so that they would rejoice in it and consider it the greatest blessing from Allah, and it opened a door to mercy, and they are bound by the proof so that they do not excuse themselves tomorrow by saying that no one was sent to alert them from their heedlessness.
