Commentary
Their saying, "Indeed, Allah is the Messiah," means that they claim the essence of Allah is the Messiah and nothing else. It has been said: There were among the Christians some who said that. It has also been said: They did not explicitly state it, but their doctrine leads to it. They believed that he creates, gives life, causes death, and manages the affairs of the world. So, who can possess anything from Allah? Who can prevent anything from His power and will if He intends to destroy those who call upon the Messiah and his mother as deities? This indicates that the Messiah is a created servant like other servants. He intended by mentioning "those on earth" alongside "the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother" that they are of their kind, with no distinction between them and them in humanity. He creates what He wills, meaning He creates from male and female, and creates from female without male, as He created Jesus. He creates from neither male nor female, as He created Adam. Or He creates whatever He wills, like the creation of birds by the hand of Jesus as a miracle for him, and the raising of the dead, and the healing of the blind and the leper, and other than that. Therefore, it must be attributed to Him and not to the human being through whom it occurs.
