Commentary
It is recited (this is a day that benefits) with the raising and addition. And with the accusative either as it being an adverb for (he said), or as (this) being the subject, and the adverb being the predicate. Its meaning is, this which we mentioned from the words of Jesus will occur on the day that benefits. It is not permissible for it to be in the nominative, like His saying: (on a day when no soul will possess). This is because it is added to something established. And Al-A'mash recited: (a day that benefits) with the tanween, like His saying: (and fear a day when no soul will compensate). If you say: what is the meaning of His saying (benefits the truthful their truth)? If it is meant their truth in the Hereafter... etc. Ahmad said: even if he answered by interpreting the truthful as in this world and their truth as in the Hereafter, so that the meaning would be: this is a day that benefits the truthful in this world their truth in the Hereafter, it would be clearer in accordance with the interpretation of Qatadah, and it would exclude Iblis and his likes from this generality. For indeed, Iblis, although he was truthful in the Hereafter, was not among the truthful in this world, so his truth in the Hereafter did not benefit him. The two interpretations are close. If it is meant their truth in the Hereafter, then the Hereafter is not a place of action. And if it is meant their truth in this world, then it does not correspond to what has been mentioned in it, because it is in the meaning of bearing witness to Jesus, peace be upon him, with truth in what he will respond with on the Day of Resurrection. I say: its meaning is the continuous truthfulness of the truthful in their worldly and Hereafter affairs. And from Qatadah: two speakers will speak on the Day of Resurrection. As for Iblis, he said: indeed Allah promised you the promise of truth, and he was truthful that day, while before that he was a liar, so his truth did not benefit him. And as for Jesus, peace be upon him, he was truthful in life and after death, so his truth benefited him.
