Tafsir for verse: 49:13
13O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

Commentary

From male and female, from Adam and Hawwa. It was said: We created each one of you from a father and a mother, so there is none among you except that he is linked to the same as the other equally, so there is no reason for boasting and superiority in lineage. The الشعب (sha'b) is the first level of the six levels that the Arabs have, which are: الشعب (sha'b), القبيلة (qabila), العمارة (imara), البطن (batn), الفخذ (fakhidh), and الفصيلة (fasila). The الشعب gathers the tribes, the القبيلة gathers the عمائر, the العمارة gathers the بطون, the البطن gathers the أفخاذ, and the الفخذ gathers the فصائل: خزيمة is a شعب, كنانة is a قبيلة, قريش is an عمارة, قصى is a بطن, هاشم is a فخذ, and العباس is a فصيلة. They are called الشعوب because the tribes branched out from them. And it was read: لِتَتَعَارَفُوا (to know one another), and لِتَعَارَفُوا (to know one another) with idgham. And لِتَعْرِفُوا (to know), meaning to learn how you are related. And لِتَتَعَرَّفُوا (to get to know one another). The meaning is that the wisdom for which He arranged you into شعوب and قبائل is so that some of you may know the lineage of others, so that no one claims lineage other than his own parents, not to boast about fathers and grandfathers, and to abandon differences and superiority in lineages. Then He clarified the trait by which a person excels over others and gains honor and dignity with Allah, the Exalted, saying: Indeed, the most honorable of you with Allah is the one who is most pious among you. And it was read: that (an) with a fatha, as if it were said: Why should one not boast about lineages? It was said: Because the most honorable of you with Allah is the one who is most pious among you, not by lineage. And about the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: He circumambulated on the day of the conquest of Mecca, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Praise be to Allah who has removed from you the عبية (ubayyah) of the ignorance and its arrogance. O people, there are only two types of people: a believer who is pious and honorable with Allah, and a wicked wretch who is insignificant with Allah." It was narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Abu Ya'la, and Ibn Abi Hatim from the narration of Abdullah ibn Dinar from Ibn Umar. And there are narrations from Abu Huraira reported by Abu Dawood, Al-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Al-Bazzar, and Ibn Mubarak in Al-Birr wa Al-Silah from the narration of Sa'id ibn Abi Sa'id from his father from him similar to it. Some said from Sa'id from Abu Huraira: And from Abdul Malik ibn Qudamah Al-Hatabi. My father told me that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, on the day of the conquest of Mecca, ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "O people..." and mentioned something similar and it was narrated. Then he recited the verse. And from him, peace be upon him: Whoever is pleased to be the most honorable of people, let him be pious to Allah. It was narrated by Al-Hakim, Al-Bayhaqi, Abu Ya'la, Ishaq, Abdul, Al-Tabarani, and Abu Na'im in Al-Hilya, all from the path of Hisham ibn Ziyad Abu Al-Miqdam from Muhammad ibn Ka'b from Ibn Abbas and it is more complete than this. Al-Bayhaqi said in Al-Zuhd: They spoke about Hisham because of this hadith, and that he used to say: He narrated to me from Muhammad ibn Ka'b then claimed that he heard it from Muhammad, then Al-Bayhaqi narrated it from the path of Abdul Jabbar ibn Muhammad Al-Ittaradi, the father of Ahmad, from Abdul Rahman Al-Taybi ibn Al-Qasim ibn Urwah from Muhammad ibn Ka'b from Ibn Abbas raising the hadith similar to it. And from Ibn Abbas: The honor of this world is wealth, and the honor of the Hereafter is piety. And from Yazid ibn Shajarah: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, passed through the market of Medina and saw a black boy saying: Whoever buys me, I have a condition that he does not prevent me from the five prayers behind the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. A man bought him, and the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, would see him at every prayer. One day he missed him, so he asked about him, and his companion said: He is ill. He visited him, then asked about him after three days and said: He is as he is. He came to him while he was in his death throes. He took care of his washing and burial. He entered upon the emigrants and the helpers, a great matter, so it was revealed.
