Commentary
It is permissible that what precedes it may act in it. That is: we would have punished them or prevented them from the Sacred Mosque at that time, and it is to be established by implying 'mention.' The meaning of the zeal of those who disbelieved and the tranquility of the believers - and zeal is pride and tranquility is dignity - is what has been narrated that when the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, camped at Hudaybiyyah, Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn Amr al-Qurashi, Huwaitib ibn Abd al-Uzza, and Mukariz ibn Hafs ibn al-Akhif, to propose to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that he return from that year on the condition that Quraysh would allow him three days in Mecca the following year. So they did that. [This was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala'il from the narration of Urwah in the story of Hudaybiyyah. In it, it is mentioned that then Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn Amr, etc., at length. The story is in the authentic narrations from the narration of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib and from the narrations of Marwan and Al-Maswar. In al-Nasa'i, it is summarized from the narration of Thabit al-Yamani from Abdullah ibn Maghfal.] They wrote a document between them, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' Suhayl and his companions said: 'We do not know this, but write: In Your name, O Allah.' Then he said: 'Write: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon with the people of Mecca.' They said: 'If we had known that you are the Messenger of Allah, we would not have prevented you from the House nor fought you, but write: This is what Muhammad ibn Abdullah has agreed upon with the people of Mecca.' The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Write what they want, for I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah and I am Muhammad ibn Abdullah.' The Muslims were about to refuse that and were repulsed by it, so Allah sent down tranquility upon His Messenger, and they became dignified and patient. And the word of piety: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah: Allah has chosen it for His Prophet and for those with him, the people of goodness and those who deserve it and who are more deserving of guidance than others. It was said: It is the word of testimony. And from Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him: The word of piety is the fulfillment of the covenant. The meaning of its addition to piety is that it is the cause of piety and its foundation. It was said: The word of the people of piety. In the Mushaf of Al-Harith ibn Suwayd, the companion of Abdullah: And they were its people and more deserving of it, and he is the one who buried his Mushaf during the time of Al-Hajjaj.
